The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
