Sheffield Wednesday Faces Serious Challenges, States New Football Authority

'Our role is integral to football's future' - independent football regulator the new chairman

The Championship club's ongoing struggles represent a a "significant problem" and the football regulator is seeking powers to examine team situations in similar circumstances, its new chair the regulator has stated.

Through a comprehensive talk, the regulator, who was appointed on Monday, showed understanding towards the club's followers.

The chairman convened with four supporter groups associated with the Championship side recently.

The football club have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in 2025, with the club failing to pay players on time on multiple instances, including in the autumn.

"Clearly Sheffield Wednesday has been a major concern for the league and a substantial concern for English football," the regulator explained.

"Sheffield Wednesday is one of the iconic names for English football and recently we have met fan representatives.

"Our aim is to acquire the ability... which will enable us to take Sheffield Wednesday - and other clubs submitted for our review if they require examination and acted upon."

Economic Challenges and Ownership Situation

Wednesday's embattled owner Dejphon Chansiri suggested earlier this year he would be willing to sell up at Hillsborough, but he has failed to complete a sale with prospective buyers.

Delayed salary payments on time in spring months resulted in restrictions being imposed by the football authorities in summer, preventing the club from carrying out any player acquisitions for the following recruitment periods, although that restriction was lifted in August.

Official's Viewpoint

The regulator explained: "Our role exists to serve the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, other clubs in similar situations where supporters are loyal to a local institution that has represented their community in numerous instances.

"I completely understand Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for all the clubs that in modern times have encountered failure, or been close to going to the wall, for factors unrelated to the supporters."

When asked if the regulator could force an chairman to relinquish a club if they are judged inappropriate, the regulator answered: "Should the inquiry concern 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we gather the evidence and understand the situation, we will."

But the regulator clarified that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be considered the final option and the regulator would prefer to cooperate with proprietors.

"The final option we would consider is begin intervening in an particular organization, an specific proprietor, without having the opportunity to collaborate with that owner to try and resolve the issues that the club's facing and the owner's facing," the regulator explained.

"However, realistically, when you review the record of football, over the past few decades there have been some owners, a small minority, but certain individuals who have acted carelessly in the manner they have operated their organizations and finally don't wish to take responsibility for the coming years."

'If we get it wrong, extraordinary progress vanishes'

The chairman convened with officials from numerous teams to detail the scope of the authority recently and insisted it was a "progressive gathering" with a "substantial involvement" from the grassroots to elite level.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because if errors are made, if the world of football gets it wrong, the extraordinary progress that's been made might evaporate rapidly," Kogan said.

"This represents everyone's worst fear in the terms of English football is a major achievement - we must maintain momentum.

"Substantial financial resources entering the sport and has been channeled for the past two decades, because there's no guarantee it will keep flowing into the sport, which is one of the reasons why I think we have to take a really clear view on potential dangers and naturally, of the coming seasons."

Elite Division Worries

Top flight officials resisted the establishment of an oversight body because of apprehensions regarding adverse consequences on the elite division's competitive balance, but the regulator stated: "I completely endorse the prosperity and expansion as an economic entity of the Premier League.

"As someone who appreciates the concern of undermining the division as a high-quality offering of this country. But simultaneously, if you talk to the Premier League after the recent gathering, they would have had a significant degree of comfort -and, actually, they have been advising us privately they have a significant confidence."

Ideological Links

The regulator remains subject to a "comprehensive investigation" by the Commissioner for Public Appointments after he disclosed making donations to the Labour Party in 2020.

The 68-year-old provided financial support for government minister the minister's leadership bid, along with that of the now Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

"I have fully disclosed my past party membership [with Labour], and that political affiliation came to an end the day the parliamentary committee confirmed my selection," the chairman stated.

"I am presently disconnected from any form of political activity."
