Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
