Government Official Says Ministry of Defence Examining Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the potential threats associated with Chinese-made cars, and staff have been told to avoid discussing secret information in any cars.

Safety Guidance for Defence Staff

In a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese cars.

The minister explained that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that security is a concern in every contemporary vehicles.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any kind of car, because of the increasing threats of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Defence Context

The announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and cause disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

The wider defence environment underscores the significance of robust protocols and caution in every aspects of government activities, including transport use to discussions practices.
