The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
